Watch Two New Trailers For Anggy Umbara's Futuristic Martial Arts Thriller, 3!

While I would love nothing more than for director Anggy Umbara's latest, 3, to get a simulataneous release with other territories overseas, chances are we're more likely to end up waiting a really long time for that to happen. If it is to happen, I sincerely hope piracy doesn't affect it, because that would be devastating, and we can never have enough genuine and original action films in this day and age.

3 sports a tremendous cast and a look that will surely appeal some to the sci-fi fan base with actors Cornielio Sunny, Abimana Arysatya and Agus Kuncoro leading the story of three former friends on different sides of the ideological spectrum in a dystopian futuristic millieu where conflict is ultimately imminent.

SYNOPSIS:

JAKARTA 2036, there have been so many changes. The peace and prosperity has returned to the country after the end of civil war and the slaughtering of radical group in 2026. 

Human rights have became the main principle of the country. Bullets has been deemed illegal. Army and policemen were only given rubber bullets to catch criminals and the remaining terrorists. A very difficult dilemma has been raised, where radical groups had returned and struggle to change the face of democracy. 

In that era, high martial-arts skill is needed, by both the authorities and the criminals. Alif, Lam and Mim are three friends of the Martial Arts school who grew up together in an Islamic Boarding School called Al Ikhlas. 

Alif, the stubborn yet honest, chose to become the police . He was determined to eradicate all forms of crime while tracking the killer of his parents. 

Lam, the empathy one, chose to become a journalist. Dreaming of spreading the truth and became the eyes of the people. 

Mim chose to teach religion and remain settled at the boarding school. Making himself to be the good example on earth and keeping the core values of his religion on this earth. All those three were met, after the chaos following the blast in a cafe. 

Evidence in investigation leads to Mim's and his students involvement. Alif has to encounter his own best friend and destroy Islamic schools where he was raised. Lam is stuck between his two friends, continue to find the common ground in order to avoid a more severe destruction. Mim chose to face the policemen and prefer to sacrifice his life. 

Alif, Lam and Mim are forced to fight each other in their fight for the truth, while keeping the family and their loved ones safe.

Meetings And Greetings: A Night Out With ARCADE KILLERS's Own Slobo And Duy Panouvic

A common practice for a lot of folks in the stunt industry outside of working on film sets, is to travel and explore other parts of the globe to acquaint with other stunt professionals - something particularly effective in an age where social media has since played a huge role in networking millions of people. Evidently, this is one area that professional stunt couple, Slobo and Duy Panouvic were keen to act on in the progression of their own careers having already spent quite awhile working their way up between working their native Germany, and in Cape Town, South Africa where they started their own professional team, Arcade Killers back in May of last year.

I have written about them a few times in the past year, so it was rather opportune for me that they decided to take their journey to my back yard, right here in New York City where they will be staying for the remainder of the summer to take in their new atmosphere, as well as find a way to collaborate with other stunt professionals if possible. In lieu of this, after a slightly-hectic train ride from Queens to Manhattan on Sunday night, I exited the Port Authority Bus Terminal and hiked a little bit to Bryant Park, and I was very excited when Slobo greeted me at the entrance.

I shook Duy's hand and that of two other acquaintances - one with whom they're currently staying in Brooklyn. From there, what followed was a candid and in-depth and stimulating conversation about their respective careers between Cape Town and Germany, their training, working on shows such as Syfy TV series Dominion and STARZ series Black Sails, and the hopes of working with folks like Ninja 2 and Boyka: Undispited 4 duo, action star Scott Adkins and fellow action actor Brahim Achabbakhe. We also talked favorite foods and other delicacies (it turns out we are all fans of dark chocolate while Slobo has a much more major thing for Peanut Butter, which I found fascinating), and I also learned that Slobo and Duy have different tastes in film - Slobo is well into various aspects of stimulating action and adventure, whereas Duy, who much more peculiar about certain genres with an interest in grounded, cerebral and visually organic storytelling...

...I'm thinking either Southpaw or Hitman: Agent 47 between now and next month would suit them. Just my opinion. :-)

At any rate, Sunday night was a fantastic evening. I can't remember the last time I had even been to the park to just relax and unwind. Slobo and Duy had a small dinner at the park before I arrived and after about twenty minutes of relaxing and chatting, the park closed and the three of us chilled out for a bit longer at a nearby MacDonalds on the second dining floor where we had a few beverages, and it wasn't long before they closed the second floor within another twenty minutes.

Indeed, it was late, and as much as I didn't want it to end, it was plenty of time for all of us to get to know one another. It was an awesome experience to meet Slobo and Duy on Sunday night, and while they continue plan out their stay here for the next several months, I look forward to seeing them at least one or two more times before they leave. Even more so, as busy as many in the stunt community are here in the big apple, I sincerely hope they continue to meet more people and collaborate here before potentially setting out to explore in California, and I, for one, hope to write about that as well.

I didn't record much of our time out on Sunday night for the sake of battery power, so I decided to so a quick outro video at the end of our evening to introduce you all. The Urban Action Showcase & Expo has endured two successful runs since launching in 2013 at the behest of its founder and executive producer, Demetrius Angelo. In addition, attendees can expect to partake in the celebration of martial arts action classics, Berry Gordy's 1984 hit, The Last Dragon, and director Lawrence Kassanoff's 1995 adaptation of the popular Midway fighting game, Mortal Kombat.

The expo will also further the advancement and promotion of independent content, otherwise with the company of Angelo's current crowdfunfing efforts for the martial arts fantasy action short, Galtow, ahead of its hopeful feature film to follow.

Bukaw Tests His Starpower For THONGDEE: THE WARRIOR

Former K-1 champion, professional fighter Bukaw Banchamek is moreso a lesser known action actor aside from having also appeared in Nopporn Watin's 2010 period thriller, Yamada: The Samurai Of Ayothaya. Nonetheless, that hasn't stopped him from the prospects of taking his potential beyond the ring and onto a movie set, and his latest move now appears to be yet another period actioner in the form of Thongdee: The Warrior.

It's more familiar territory for Thai action cinema it seems - a village backdrop, tribal ambience and a little romance with stylish action relative to the usual flying knees and elbows, mixed with what looks like a mingling of Chinese martial arts as well with another actor. But more importantly, it's Bukaw in the lead, and in an industry that now remains looking for its next big regional star in a post-Jaa era, it looks as if they've found him and it's safe to say he looks the part.

DESCRIPTION:

Phraya Phichai was a Siamese general serving under King Taksin. After the fall of Ayudhya in 1767, Phraya Pichai and Chao Phraya Chakri (who later become the first King of Chakri Dynasty) followed Phraya Taksin in repelling the Burmese and reuniting Siam. They were considered Phraya Taksin's left and right hands.

Though lacking in certain post-production ornaments, there are two versions of the clip now available online with one lasting over five minutes (that's the one you can watch below) and various ramblings from Thai media reports that The Troop Of Ghost and Panya Raenu trilogy helmer Bin Bunluerit is in line to direct the film beginning this October. Hopefully there will be more information on this as soon as it's available, so stick around and put this one on your radar for future reference.

Watch The New Teaser For Upcoming Sci-Fi Thriller, TEMPLE, And Then Pray It Becomes A Full Movie!

Following the unveiling of a batch of new stills several days ago, the folks over at 3 Arts Entertainment are kindly keeping their word with its base and have released the trailer for yet another ambitious new project in the making. And no, I don't use the word ambitious loosely, as it perfectly describes just the kind of filmmaker Nguyen-Anh Nguyen is in the wake of the growing fandom long after the release of his concept trailer, The Akira Project last year.

Temple is the name of the project now on par for a fantastic shortfilm release this June with action star up-and-comer Osric Chau starring and a trailer is now online as well. The short is also being primed as a pitch for financing a bigger feature film, so if all goes well on that end, those who were fond of The Akira Project may very well get to see Nguyen's cinematic vision on a more broader scale as it's much deserved. He's honestly proven himself to be quite the worthy filmmaker and with such an adherance to cyberpunk action and quality stunts and storytelling, a workable proof-of-concept like this would be terrible to ignore in my opinion.

SYNOPSIS:

By 2085, ocean levels have risen to a point that entire coastal cities and islands have been submerged. On an island megalopolis, a genetic virus and cybernetic beings are threatening the survival of its population. Oz, a health services employee, must find a way to survive amidst the swelling chaos.

Watch The New Teaser For AMC TV's INTO THE BADLANDS!

AMC Television is currently ramping up a promotional campaign for its 2015 slate, which now officially includes the current preparation and production of the new martial arts series, officially titled Into The Badlands. The show has been picking up steam for many months now since its announcement last July prior to landing international film star, actor Daniel Wu to lead the cast of the new series with The Judge helmer David Dobkin directing.

Into the Badlands is a genre-bending martial arts series very loosely based on the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West. In a land controlled by feudal barons, Into the Badlands tells the story of a great warrior and a young boy who embark on a journey across a dangerous land to find enlightenment.

"We’re incredibly excited to blaze the trail, bringing a martial arts drama to television," says writer/co-showrunner Miles Millar. 

The show stars Hong Kong film star and master martial arts filmmaker Daniel Wu (City of Glass, The Heavenly Kings), Emily Beecham (28 Weeks Later, The Village), Sarah Bolger (The Tudors, In America) and Oliver Stark (The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box, My Hero). The project was created by writers/showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar (Shanghai Noon, Smallville). They'll serve as Executive Producers alongside Oscar-nominated producers Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg (Pulp Fiction, Contagion), as well as Stephen Fung and Daniel Wu (Tai Chi Zero).

NBC's New Martial Arts Drama, WARRIOR, Now In Development

The recent successes over the years with animated action adventure shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Attack On Titan and The Legend Of Korra are certainly lending some credence to the notion that a bit of live-action fanfare is in order, especially with everything that has been happening online with shows like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter.

Alas, NBC is currently working on trying to muscle up its own programming according to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter (via AV Club & i09).  Crossbones series co-executive producer David DiGilio will write and executive produce the series with Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald for a new female-centric martial arts drama titled Warrior, and it goes a little something like this:

In a grounded, contemporary multicultural and sometimes magical milieu, a damaged heroine works undercover with physical and spiritual guidance from a mysterious martial arts master to bring down an international crime lord.

Not too long ago, we had shows like Buffy, Nikita, and short-lived action dramas like UPN's Freedom and Russell Wong starrers Vanishing Son and Black Sash, so it's certainly refreshing to see a new martial arts series in developement in among others, especially in an age where comic book superheroes adaptations are the in-thing. Actor/producer Daniel Wu's upcoming appearance Badlands is still on deck for AMC as well, and with any luck, popular online concepts like Epic Rival's own Clandestine will finally bear the fruits of network priority following such a long and on-going process as well.

Warrior hasn't cast anyone yet at the moment, but given the plot and the amount of screenfighting and acting talent we have seen, let's hope NBC doesn't just pick a pretty face that can "look tough" when yelling "Action!". The production of director Chris Nahon's new tournament action thriller, Lady Bloodfight, is set to resume at some point between later this month and February. Not all the details are being handed out just yet, although we've already been graced with a number of viral photos dating back to late last year with Nahon joined by actress Amy Johnston, producer Bey Logan and action choreographer Hung Yan Yan and others.

Nowadays, with filming almost right around the corner, Logan is currently unveiling four new promotional character photos for two of the film's actresses, Kathy Wu as Wai and Jet Tranter as Cassidy. For those of you who have been keeping up, Tranter was previously attached to star in the film in its previous iteration as Lady Bloodsport with a different cast line-up being prepped for plans to film late in 2013. For whatever reasons there were, however, evidently the production steered in a new direction and changes were made in lieu of the film's European Film Market announcement at the top of 2014. Alas, with Tranter still attached, it will be interesting to see who will further line-up our combatants for this international female-centric action thriller.

From Voltage Pictures, Lady Bloodfight joins Wu and Tranter with Jenny Wu and lead actress Amy Johnston in the story of Jane, a traveling backpacker in Asia whose exceptional fighting skills are put to the test against hidden forces of evil within "The Kumite", an all-female underground fight circuit. As earlier, more casting details are expected in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled for more announcements!

Indie Kung Fu Comedy Homage, UNLUCKY STARS Wraps Post-Production!

The road has been a long one for debut director, actor and stuntman Dennis Ruel whose long-awaited crowdfunded kung fu comedy homage, Unlucky Stars has been heavily in post-production for the past couple of years in a process lasting several. The last we heard was an update dating back to the start of last year when the film finally wrapped picture lock with plans to finally release the film sometime back in the Fall or Winter while the next phase of post-production needed completion.

Well, that process took a bit longer, but thankfully, that part of the job is finally over as of last month, as per an announcement from the film's official Facebook page with several film festival entries and screening venues and dates in San Francisco and Los Angeles now awaiting confirmation. Essentially, it's now safe to say that film is much closer to getting 2015 release, provided nothing else stands in the way, and with regard to how film distribution has taken shape in the past year or so, it's pleasing to know that a likely a theatrical and digital release may further grant this ambitious labor of love the big screen justice long hoped for.

SYNOPSIS:

When Peru's Biggest Action Film Star and Jordan's newest rising talent find themselves pursued by a notorious Bookie, a couple of private investigators are forced to choose between their job and their conscience.

Ruel and lead actor Ken Quitugua are joined by actress Giovanni Espiritu, actors Sari Sabella and Jose Montesinos, and a perpetual cast listing of martial artists and stunt performers that embody much of the current online community of screenfighting talent we see today.
