Screener Review: WILD CITY (2015)

I have only seen just several Ringo Lam flicks in my time as a follower of the Hong Kong cinema. That stated, all are taken into account when encompassing the experience of Asian cinema, and with his latest return to the helm, Wild City will surely appeal to the niche after nearly seven years away from the director's chair.

The film follows actor Louis Koo in the role of T-Man Kwok, a former cop who resigns after a failed bust and becomes a bartender. Soon, chance encounter with a drunken woman named Yun, played by Tong Liya, turns from an act of good will into a chaotic fight for survival on the streets of Hong Kong with Shawn Yue in the role of T-Man's step brother, Chang, immediately swept into the calamity. With each passing moment of increasing danger, T-Man and Chang learn the ultimate truth of what's at stake, and without much of an incentive to trust the cops - much less T-Man's old squad, the three have no choice but to work together to follow the trails of blood, greed and courruption and save Yun's life, as well as their own.

From top to bottom, the story is built on philosophical narratives centered on human nature, true definitions of family and true justice, the incidental evils of money and the consequences of greed, and spiritual enlightenment. It's an adequate balance between all of these without steering away from itself and manages to deliver intense drama, poignance and charm with a lot of great performances here by the cast; The characters of Koo and Yue often come to blows over material and ideological differences throughout the film with their mother, Mona, played by actress Yuen Qiu, in between, otherwise outlining the bond that holds them together. Liya holds her own as the very magnet of trouble she becomes as per her desperation for escape from her former a two-bit scumbag lawyer played by Michael Tse while Joseph Chang and Jack Kao play Blackie and Boss King, members of Boss King's crew hired to find Yun, as well as actor Sam Lee who also plays the leader of his own gang in doing the same, although its Koo and Chang who take the lead by the end as two of the film's strongest opposing forces just before the dramatic climax.

Simon Yam stars as the leading Superintendent of T-Man's former department, and while there isn't much of him to remember by the end credits, his performance here doesn't go completely unnoticed; Despite their strained acquantance as former colleagues, Yam's is a character partly integral in learning more about T-Man and Chang and the circumstances that preset the rest of the film, thus helping the movie stay on focus as all the pieces come together. Character depth goes unneglected here on virtually all sides and it motivates you to care about what happens on all sides while Frankie Tam's script continues to stir all of the other main ingredients, peppering with a dash of espionage and a clever touch of sleight-of-hand by the third act. Flashback edits play a significant  takes off while just a smidget of its editorial ornamentation here can be a bit much at times, but the main agenda here remains fulfilled, nontheless.

And then of course there is the action, and much to the delight of Lam's fanbase, there will be plenty of it here with the prevalence of high-speed chases and intense violence with a only a few gruesome sequences that would bode easily well among the R-rated crowd. The are only a few gun battles with a couple of action sequences involving some fisticuffs, machetes and knives, and just a few interrogation scenes that get quite blunt and physical, further adding to the dark milleu on display throughout the film.

Wild City makes for a suitable return to the big screen following Triangle in 2007. Folks who are keen on classic crime flicks like City On Fire will be able to breathe this one as Lam makes his way back again, and with an impressive cast and script on hand. The flaws are minimal and nothing that will take away from the film's delivery, all in all embodying this film as is: a thrilling crime story with touching drama and action scenes that aren't afraid to destroy public property and blow things up when needed. And that's something the fans will appreciate.

Well Go USA will proudly be releasing this one in select U.S. theaters on July 31, so visit the official website and get your tickets fast!

THE DEADLY RECLAIM Sports A BTS Featurette With Benny Chan, Sammo Hung & Co.

Just off the heels of completing his latest role in The Bodyguard, yes, action legend and choreographer Sammo Hung is still making movies, and this time he's with director Benny Chan for the current production of period war flick, The Deadly Reclaim. Chan reunites with quite a few of the cast from previous films, namely The White Storm lead actors Lau Ching-Wan and Louis Koo, as well as New Police Story co-stars Liu Kai-Chi and Sammy Hung, and Invisible Target antagonist, action star Wu Jing in his latest role since his last two films were so physically tolling they nearly put him out of commission.

SYNOPSIS:
The story is set in 1941, China was trodden by incessant civil wars then. The central government had lost its power while warlords claiming their territories. The law and order in Puchang, a remote village, were temporarily enforced by a civic police led by Yang Kenan until the new ruling warlord Ca.

Filmsmash forwarded a BTS featurette of which a few have already begun circulating online via MTime, and the footage so far looks very promising. With an ensemble cast like this, The Deadly Reclaim is a seeming reassurance of the promise of great martial arts cinema to come. Rise Of The Legend star Eddie Peng also stars with Quan Yuan, Shu-ying Jiang, Philip Keung and Berg Ng for a speculative release sometime later this year. Check out the footage below along with some set pics!

Sci-Fi Robo Thriller, VIRTUS Lends Us A New Teaser With Louis Koo Starring!

It was sometime last year that we were introduced to a slick teaser for an upcoming feature that would easily suit today sci-fi action niche. Virtus is the name of said project, and here and now we finally get to add a human face into the mix with actor Louis Koo suited up and ready to kick some robot ass in the newest teaser now going viral.

Koo took to this year's events at HK FilMart in representation of his One Cool Film Group LTD. banner, launched in 2013, which he launched in 2013. The film, to possibly be directed by Benny Chan with a budget reportedly of up to HK $300 million dollars is one of an eight-title slate announced at the time with its development currently in the hands of one of its partners, leading Hong Kong VFX studio, FatFace Production LTD. who featured the first teaser last summer.

Details are needed as much as they are unavailble right now, but this is a great starting point for FatFace, a company that's been around for close to ten years or more with an impressive workload (The Warlords, Storm Warriors and Tai Chi Hero to name a few ) and a costume designer with quite a resumé of his own, and I sincerely hope this studio keeps up the good work on this end. The footage looks absolutely solid and is sure to continue hitting all the right notes when this movie finally flourishes for its home audience in Asia and abroad.

Koo is currently slated to appear in Ringo Lam's new crime thriller, Wild City, opening in Hong Kong, China and the U.S. this July. In the meantime, take a look at what Virtus is all about in the second teaser below.

SPL 2: A TIME FOR CONSEQUENCES Lets Out The Mayhem In A Brand New Trailer!

The verdict is still out on how well director Soi Cheang's SPL 2: A Time For Consequences will stand with audiences. In the meantime, the promotional campaign remains on-going and the footage is pulling no punches with actors Wu Jing, Tony Jaa and Max Zhang at the center of this gruesome crime tale thematic of Chinese astrology.

The plot of this particular sequel installment is quite intricate with a much more grander scale for its characters and setting. My own summation here: Run by a corrupt warden (Zhang), a Thai prison and its illegal orga smuggling ring and an elusive crimeboss (Louis Koo) are the initial stake for an undercover Hong Kong cop (Jing) whose cover is blown and must find a way to break out, while serving as the only bone marrow match for the dying daughter of one of the guards who helps him (Jaa).

The film is releasing on June 18, and we're more than likely to keep seeing more and more posters and footage surface. However, Malaysia cinema chain GSC Movies is showcasing a brand new trailer for the film that bodes just nicely before then, and I'm almost certain we are likely to hear some acquisition news for other territories with Cannes in full effect.

Check out the goods below along with another featurette released this week.

Watch A New Featurette For SPL 2: A TIME FOR CONSEQUENCES!

Depending on whether or not you're into featurettes or anything that may potentially spoil your later enjoyment for director Soi Cheang's latest, SPL 2: A Time For Consequences, consider yourself otherwise warned. The film is just a little over a month away and Bravos Pictures is now underway with marketing the film with the usual assortment of posters, trailers and featurettes, and speaking of the latter, there are already a few now making the rounds.

The one at the bottom doesn't seem so bad...well, at least compared to one I caught earlier this month (find that one and watch it at your own risk), and should whet the appetite a bit more ahead of the film's release. Preset by the first film nearly a decade ago, Wu Jing and Max Zhang are joined by international action star Tony Jaa and co-stars Louis Koo and Simon Yam as the film maintains its astrological millieu for a story of characters destined to clash right down to the violent and tragic end...but not before some explosive martial arts action, and for a cast like this, expect plenty.

SYNOPSIS:
Undercover cop Kit (Wu Jing) becomes a junkie in order to catch Mr Hung (Louis Koo), the mastermind behind a crime syndicate. When the operation goes sour and Kit blows his cover, his supervisor and uncle Wah (Simon Yam) decides to terminate the operation. When Kit disappears without a trace, Wah defies the order from his commanding officer and tracks Kit to a prison in Thailand.
Thai Police officer Chai (Tony Jaa) becomes a prison guard in order to raise money for his daughter who has leukemia. He’s assigned to keep an eye on Kit. Even though Chai and Kit are in opposing positions and they don’t speak a common language, Kit turns out to be a suitable bone marrow donor who can save Chai’s daughter. While Chai is determined to keep Kit alive, the warden (Zhang Jin) wants him dead to ensure the smooth operation of the prison, which is the front for Mr Hung’s organ trafficking business.
Mr Hung shows up in Thailand so he can use his younger brother’s (Jun Kung) heart in a heart transplant to save his own life. The stage is set for a showdown...

Hong Kong is the place to be right now for nearly any and all business now for Hong Kong directors, namely long-celebrated legendary filmmaker Ringo Lam now heralding his latest return to the fray with the new crime thriller, Wild City. It's Lam's latest since working on his share of the weight in the 2007 pic, Triangle, and with this in mind, those familar with the DNA of Lam's body of work will likely see this newest effort as an exceptional treat worth viewing.

SYNOPSIS:
A mystery beautiful woman carrying a case of money no one knows the story of behind that stunning face. She met two brothers and the adventure starts from here. This team of three being chased by the police and gangsters all came for the case of the money. They have no way to hide and no way to go but confronting the situation by showing the true of them.
The cast did see some coming and going before production but now lists Drug War and SPL 2: A Time For Consequences co-star Louis Koo leading with actress Tong Liya and actors Shawn Yue and Joseph Chang. Distribution Workshop picked up the international rights to the film earlier this month ahead of this week's events at the HKFilMart where Wild City has unleased its latest trailer with a release pending courtesy of Bravo Pictures. Take a look!

SPL 2: A TIME FOR CONSEQUENCES Unleashes The Inner Beast With Four New Character Posters

2015 just got better for fans of international action star Tony Jaa as he moves forward and beyond his historic career with the addition of three new titles so far, two of which will arriving as early as next month with the third to follow suit this summer.

SPL 2: A Time For Consequences kicks off its campaign this week ahead of its expected July release with specific dates and territories pending, following director Wilson Yip's 2005 crime thriller, SPL, which signaled an artful return to form for the Hong Kong action genre headlining action star Donnie Yen at the time. This time, The Monkey King helmer Soi Cheang fills in the director's chair with Yip taking on producer duties with Paco Wong with a script by Jill Leung and Huang Ying that will reintroduce the central astrological themes surrounding our characters, several of which will surely take primal form based on what these four new character posters below depict. Take a look!

SYNOPSIS:
After busting a local gangster Hong in an undercover operation, hard-boiled cop Kit is captured by Hong's men and wakes up in jail in Thailand facing a life sentence. While in police custody, Hong strikes a deal with Kit's supervisor Wah to trade his freedom for Kit's. Wah traces Kit to Thailand and manages to convince to new prison guard Chai to help save Kit because Kit is one of the few eligible bone marrow donors who can save Chai's daughter, who's suffering from leukemia. Hong breaks out of jail and flees to Thailand and order Kit's executive. When Kit learns of Hong's jailbreak, he's determined to bring him to justice.
Jaa joins The Grandmaster co-star Zhang Jin and returning SPL stars, actors Simon Yam and action star Wu Jing with a special appearance by actor Louis Koo. A trailer is expected very, VERY soon, so watch this space.
