THE HIT LIST - July 27, 2015

This past week was pretty busy for me, so content has been slower than usual. But, that doesn't mean I haven't been keeping up with with what's happening in independent material and other matters of visual feats of sports and athleticism of which you will see plenty.

Time to get things rolling, and as always with a new playlist of stunt and training reels with performances by Aaron Gassor in full Sith mode, stunt players Moussa Sako, Luciano Arnieri, Deangelo Harding, Laura Beamer, Hayley Wright, Jesse Haus, Jennifer Li, Chistopher Leps, Mallory Thompson, Jwaundace Candace, Jared Losano, Sina Ali, the latest action director reel by Mark Mottram featuring scenes from the 2014 thriller, The November Man, and a new director reel by lensman and action director Godefroy Ryckewaert.

For the next leg, while I don't always feature freerunning in these, gems featuring any aspect of stunt performance are welcome with solid video production to boot. Damien Walters himself has since applied this in a new video of his own in a new video where he pretty much freeruns while engulfed in flames. It's not the first time I've seen this particular stunt, but it's also seldom done since the last time I'd seen a traceur on fire was about two years ago, which is pretty amazing.

Walters kicked off the new year in great fashion as well with the release of Matthew Vaughan's Kingsman: The Secret Service in which he performed stunts and helped train in the fight action as well, and he also put together an impressive short video ahead of the film's release. This is a guy that really knows his stuff, so I wouldn't fall asleep on him.

Other videos to accompany this segment include a new globetrotting reel featured on Team Farang's new channel in which parkour wunderkinds Luci Romberg, Anan Anwar and Jason Paul went leaps and bounds around Los Angeles, Bangkok and Japan.. thus the perks of being a traceur; you literally get to run around the world. Not. Even. Kidding - And speaking of, you will also find Romberg's latest video in the form of a submission sampler among a playlist of several now online for this year's Red Bull: Art Of Motion completion in the lush outskirts of Oia, Greece. I didn't include them all in this playlist because there are so many, but these are the ones that stood out to me while fishing through them.

While we are on the subject of athletic competition, martial arts trickerd from across the country are being invited out to East Windsor in Connecticut for Battle Of Fury 2015. Tricking gatherings are full of electricity with badass performances by young and inspired martial arts purveyors and experts from nearly all walks of life, which is worthy of noting as much as the phenomenon has taken shape in recent years, so help keep the spirit alive and if you're interested, headover to the link to get your tickets today and check out the promo for the event below!

Well into the new year, little is known about the future endeavors of Just Kidding Films duo Bart Kwan and Joe Jo outside of their usual feats of comedic spectacle. However, whatever their later aspirations may be, it clearly involves martial arts, and they've undergone quite a bit of training for some time now with martial artist, actor and action trainer, Force Storm Entertainment's own Noah Fleder. This week, Kwan and Jo are offering up another journal entry enviting subscribers of their network into a day of weapons training at South Coast Martial Arts.

Keep in mind, martial arts training is some serious stuff, especially with weapons...although clearly that doesn't take away from any of the hilarity you're about to see. They really do put the 'stick' in "slapstick". Watch please.

Alas, we've come to the last leg of this week's Hit List and the fight stuff is a bit light this time around, but still worth lending an audience to. First up is a trailer for the August 3 premiere for the new webseries, Warigami, a vengeful tale of martial arts and fantasy where paper is the deadliest weapon of choice.

The proceeding two videos thereafter include a new group test fight by Gay Alexandre with Thomas Lorber leading the badassery, and the newest fight short from the growing crew over at Wolf Stunts titled, The Bag.

The next video comes from director Andy Hourahine with the new shortfilm, Karate Girl: Brawl. Produced by Blair Johannes, the project sequelizes last year's Karate Girl: Streetfight with martial artist Julia Hourahine back once more and leading a story that takes our martial arts heroine's journey into further contemplation. The project here takes on a more spiritual shape here, and with your help, her path can go even further, so subscribe to the project's fanpage and lend your support, accordingly.

And lastly, and all the better for it, is a filmmaker who I've rambled about for nearly as long as I've run this blog. Stuntman and oft-filmmaker Emmanuel Manzanres has returned to charm the hell out of the online action fanbase once more with a spectacular new group offering in the new short, Monster. FMA purveyor and action actor Bryan Sloyer plays our captive forced to fight from the bloodthirsty clutches of four goons led by Jerry Quill in a scrumptious onslaught of hand-bound fistcuffs and full-fledged, no-holds-barred bat-cracking, headbashing, flesh-wounding facial reconstruction of only the brutal kind. This jewel of a video is literally so good it hurts, and bares all the markings of what it truly means to create quality content.

Someone get these people on a TV show please. Who must I bake cookies for in order for this to happen?

A few more honorable mentions go out this week to independent filmmaer Vlad Rimburg's latest fan reel attributed to legendary action star Jean-Claude Van Damme, as well as actress and filmmaker Toy Lei for her Best Actress and Best Action Film victory among the winners this year's 11th installation of the 72-Hour Shootout competion hosted by the Asian American Film Lab in NYC for her new short, Boxer. The short is currently not available to the web yet, but the stills are still available in case you missed them...

THE HIT LIST - June 8, 2015

This week's Hit List load is choc-filled with goodies; there was one that I absolutely LOVED and if you're a fan of Star Wars, Batman and Marvel, you're going to be absolutely fulfilled by what you're about to see. Ah, and there is music too!

That said, crack a bag of good eats open and put this playlist below on full screen, because it only gets more spectacular by the end. Team Cascade's own Ben Milord kicks things off with his newest stunt reel followed by that of Kendall Wells thereafter (more on him later), and other reels from Lauren Okadigbo, Lang Yip, Jayden Irving, Damien Buffard, Jerry T. Adams, Korey Fackler, Mike Needham and Geoff Samuels. The list completes itself with two solid fight choreography reels from Peter Berube and the one and only Philip Silvera!

Next up is a series of still, some of which have already gone public. The first is a small handful of shots from Bat In The Sun's next episode of Superpower Beatdown that pits Joker and Harley Quinn against Deadpool and Domino. The second batch comes from a shortfilm featuring action actress and stuntwoman Toy Lei and West Empire Production's own Lovel Johnson Jr. among the cast in Boxer, and there are no two ways about it...there will be some boxing!; Word is that Boxer is still being circulated in festivals so there won't be any open releases any time soon, but when it does, it will be a part of Hit List history yet!

Now that we've settled things above, it's about to get a lot more bloody and brutal. Several test fights are now online, and with the great pleasure of watching many of these filmed with impressive quality and creativity, starting with Fight Factory's latest, Five Directors with each performer directing a short action sequence between two of its members at a time. Other short videos featured beneath come from Jaze Phuaductions with Yan KayKay demonstrating a la Guy Ritchie how to stop a rapist, Wolf Stunts' own David Conk lending his own etiquette lesson in a Transporter-inspired fan fight, indie company West Empire Productions's new ensemble four-way fight, Rising Tiger's own Leroy Nguyen's latest attempt to goad Daniel Sim in a new test fight, stuntmen Taylor Tai and Yusuf Ahmed workin' it for the lens under Reel Deal Action's own Tanay Genco Ulgen, indie actioner Darren Holmquist's own upload of a key fight sequence in the 2014 webseries, Disavowed (series link in the description) and Leo Kei Angelos's latest get together with actress Bonnie von Duyke for vampire huntress concept, Fury.

Finally, we now get into some longer format items on the Hit List, and the first comes by way of a 2011 collaboration between Thousand Pounds and producer Jace Hall in a concept video that pits FCSyndicate familiar, action actress Amy Johnston against seven other performers. Johnston's performace caliber is widely known among netizens for a similar video that has gained sheer virility in the last few years and became the ultimate precursor amid a growing career in stunt performance that has since led to her forthcoming debut lead role in director Chris Nahon's upcoming Lady Bloodfight. In that respect, clearly this is one video that does Johnston justice! (To note, yes. That would also be her in the stills above as Harley Quinn)

The next video you're about to see features Kendall Wells (see above) in a hard-hitting hitman comedy short, Apt. 29. Some of that footage is in Wells's reel but is also available in full below with actress Sara Warner who plays the kind of girlfriend who will defend you with her life...even long after the break-up! Isn't that sweet?

Apt. 29 is the first of several projects to come from director and fight coordinator Luke LaFontaine's War Studios and it's Warner's action debut after two years of hard work and training leading up to what she hopes will be an open door toward more action-packed projects like it with fellow stunt professionals watching. It's well worth the view below, and the laughs that follow.

Alright, time to get musicky for just a little bit! Winding down this leg of the Hit List is more content from filmmaker Bryan Sloyer in yet another poetic testament to art in multiple forms. Joining Jerry Quill and actress and stuntwoman and musician, 2013 interview subject Michelle Jubilee Gonzalez, Music Man is the name of this latest gem, and hitting all the right notes...in the face. Hard. And speaking of Quill, he also joins a flurry of fellow fallguys in singer Lord Huron's music video, Fool For Love, which aired back in March.

And lastly, Hollywood stunt and fight coordinator Larnell Stovall is back and making the rounds with an interesting concept video surrounding Image Comics publication, Romp. It's a bit of a throwback to when Stovall's earlier time at 87Eleven granted him an opportunity to apply this concept and turn it into workable action choreography with stuntman Christopher Brewster on hand as the title character - an armless crimefighter. As you're about to see, the video speaks for itself, and this is something that could awesomely do well for a series or a film with the right people. THE HIT LIST - April 27, 2015!

The past week was insane for me, as there have been tons of things I needed to get done whilst completing today's Hit List. Fortunately, I'm making headway here and managed to finish knocking this puppy out all in a day, on top of wrapping up a special project over the weekend as well.

In the meantime, let's get things going with this week's Hit List of stunt performance and choreography/training reels and other fine gems from Sia Alipour, Hannah Betts, Simon Potter, Doc Duhame, Niko Dalman, Cedric Tellier, Mike Moeller and Roberto Lopez!

Now for something a little bit more comprehensive and formal - It was World Tai Chi Day on Saturday, and in lieu of this, acclaimed Tai Chi practioner Wang Hai Jun performed a bit of his craft in the new short, Towards The Light from UK-based Maker Projects. Pretty fluid and nice on the eyes as Tai Chi always is as deadly it can be in its sheer subtlety, and definitely something kung fu training aficionados can appreciate. Beneath that, well, is something not so subtle with a performance by Shaolin Temple trained Shi Yong Hong getting some freestlye in with a vivacious double broadsword form in a new video from the folks over at Kung Fu Heroes!

Getting into teaser and trailer territory here for just a bit, there are two right now worth taking a glimpse at - the first is the most recent teaser for the second installation of the fan-inspired titular Marvel property from Workhorse Pictures in Storms Of Carnage: The Black Panther Unleashed - Part 2. It follows last year's successful short and introduces a new superheroine into the mix and you can probably guess who it is.

The second beneath it comes from Garage Hero's own Bueno who's been honing in his craft at YouTube Space Japan for about a year now, with one of his earliest projects there being the Gonzo action-packed sexy red-band promo project, Yakuzambie. Now, the famed Gun Caliber helmer is back with a new trailer for an upcoming webseries that adheres to the same, totally eye-popping sexy ninja genre for its fans in Ayakashi Zamurai. Eight episodes are pending by this summer with Kimura Keisaku starring along with actresses Hara Natsuko and fellow YouTube personality Seikiguchi Aimi, and others.

And now, we start the fisticuffs, and at the top is a new test fight from Wolf Stunts in the latest "Home Invasion" setting with David Conk and Ben Aycrigg. Beneath that is Bryan Sloyer's newest gem in the form of Mercy with performances by Jay Kwon and Anthony Oh, and lastly, following the teaser from a few Hit Lists ago comes Michael Lehr's own new longstanding project VerseS, which debuted this month. It's the first of an eight-part series from he and the gang at Fight Factory Stunt Team, with poetically violent performances by Lehr along with Oscar Leiva, Vaughndio Forbes, Jerry Quill and Katelyn Brooke, and the series is still in production with part three close to completion.

THE HIT LIST - April 6, 2015

My weekend was huge, and the week before it was pretty busy. Still, hell bent on maintaining new content as with every week, I've returned once more with the Hit List with all the usual bits of action gems you can enjoy.

Let's kick things off with a new fight reel from The Challenge Letter co-star, aussie actress Maria Tran followed by reels from Travis Wong, Duy Panouvic of Arcade Killers, Ryan Hunter, Maria Sova, Jerome Teague, Nnamdi Nwosa, Andrea Ross and the latest fight reel from Cinematic Fight Studio, with some more stuntin' from freerunners Vlad Height and Lennon Shannon!

Now let's get fighting, and for this, we can thank creator and actor Noah Fleder upon the launch of his new channel, Force Storm Entertainment and the debut of its first project, Vlad Rimburg's new Star Wars fan short, The Betrayal!

Kicking this next portion is the latest test choreography video led by stuntman and screenfighter Kai Fung Rieck. Beneath that is a 70's style action comedy from the folks over at Lunar Stunts, Tough Street - a story of love, betrayal, greed, cool action and shameless overacting, and a lot of fun to catch. Take a look at it below as well as two other test fight shorts: Kevin Barile's latest Bourne-style action gem with bladed weaponry and deadly hand-to-hand choreography in The Bourne Elimination with Bryan Sloyer, and Sloyer's latest cerebral action-packed regal throwdown, Queen led by Amy Sturdivant opposite Jay Kwon, Michael Lehr and others.

More on Lehr below as we cap off this Hit List with some shortfilm trailers: VerseS kicks things off with its own teaser as its well on the way, followed by a trailer for UK filmmaker Andrew Kueh's student short, Prime Contact, and the latest trailer for Henry Kim's long-awaited short, All Men Are Thieves which is currently debuting later this month in San Francisco at the Roxie theater on April 23 and 24 - Tickets are available at Sparxo.

This next one comes from German stunt fighter, actor Andy Long Nguyen and his latest experimental homage to 80's Hong Kong action cinema, currently still underway as of 2013 and made with all the tropes and attributes of a dated Hong Kong action flick. Notably, these aren't the only folks to take this approach to shortfilm content lately, which says a lot about how much appreciation there still is for the golden era of Hong Kong cinema. And clearly, there's a ton of it here.

THE HIT LIST - January 5, 2015

The new year has barely begun, and there's already tons of material floating around online with today's entry host to its usual amalagam of largely new and a few dated videos. Yes, it's insane, but it's also a wonderful (and delightfully explosive) reminder of what we can expect for the next 360 days. So, rest assured, lest you self-proclaimed sports and martial arts action fans find yourselves missing out on the immense amount of hidden talent online, there's a world out there full of artists looking to win your approval. And Film Combat Syndicate is happy to oblige.

If you're knowledgeable of the tricking community, the name Jeremy Marinas might ring a bell. He's hugely successful among other professional athletes in a career that has ultimately granted him a chance to work on plenty of feature films and shortfilm projects, namely Man Of Tai Chi (2013), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), and online shorts such as Death Before Dishonor and Garbage Day. If this is your intro to Marinas, then you've arrived just in time to check out his latest sampler below.

Up next is someone I've mentioned before. Again, another popular name in the martial arts community, actress and renowned martial artist and XMA purveyor Rayna Vallandingham has made quite a name for herself among millenials, having become the youngest black belt ever to win eleven (11) world martial arts championship titles by the age of ten. Needless to say, she's been a busy girl in the last three years,  and all prior to landing her latest role in actor and director Phillip Rhee's forthcomimg martial arts drama, Underdog Kids.

I think if it weren't for the rising popularity of parkour in the past decade through its communal buildup online, we would have less happier people in the world. I often look at these videos and wish this sport was known to me when I was much younger, as it really does seem to take you places, as does the latest contribution from parkour videographer and enthusiast Joel Eggimann with the new video, Adventure Stories, a testamemt to living life to its fullest purpose.

Actor and martial artist Gil Sanabria is someone I've had my eye on for a while now. Currently dabbling in a number of independent projects while working on building his career as a stuntman and fight choreographer, his latest reel should prove as a nice little introduction for you if this is your first time hearing of him.

Up next is a reel featuring a perpetual amount of previous and upcoming work from filmmaker Eric Nguyen over at Lunar Stunts Action Cinema. Shorts like Fair Game, Eat. Pray. Ninja. and El Guerrero are all prime examples of what Nguyen is capable of, and the potential that lies there. It'll be a blast to see what he comes up with this year!

Alas, we get fighting, and it's with great, GREAT pleasure to share the latest get together between action actors Gui DaSilva and Nick Benseman, and LBP Stunts Chicago mainstay Emmanuel Manzanares. It's been a few months since we've seen something from him, and from the looks of his first video of 2015, he's getting things off to a great start. I'm ready for anything!

This one was a late catch on Monday last week, but it still feels good to finally share with you straight from Shaun Charney's YouTube platform over at Dragon Phoenix Entertainment. Charney gets some screentime here alongside actress and model Ishida Sachiko and Slug Street Scrappers co-star Saito Mari. I've written plenty about these three in the past year, so a quick internet search will definitely take you where you can find even more of them on screen. Sample some of it below!

It's pretty clear that things are brewing for something new over in Australia with longstanding film producer Mike Leeder (One Million K-l-icks, Ultimate Justice) on hand. To date, the latest bit of proof has since arrived with recent new pre-viz fight choreography clip courtesy of action choreographer Trung Ly and his students over at Đồng Thanh Alliance Martial Arts in Sydney.

We'll be sure to find out more on what this will all mean come next year. In the meantime, push play!

This next video comes with the great pleasure of having already, finally, gotten a foothold of independent filmmakers Lester "Leroy" Nguyen and Edmund Shum. The two had a great Winter run last year upon making some sparks at the Urban Action Showcase and Expo in New York City while representing their production banner, Rising Tiger Films, and their award-winning Two Minute Fight category short, Baddest, is no exception.

Nguyen and Shum have other plans for 2015, including hopefully finding a proper platform to sell their latest labor of love, Black Scar Blues (and you can read more about that by clicking here), in addition to completing a slate of upcoming project after taking the creative helm of the female-centric action cinema platform, Deadly Dymes, with the first project, Exhit Wounds, officially on the way.

For now, though, let's see which of these Rising Tigers are Baddest!

This next one is quite the throwback, dating back to just a few years ago when wristband company, EFX, got together with Russian martial arts and tricking sports team, Street Union to create an advertisement. I found it on Friday morning last week and I figured this would be something worth sharing, particularly since there isn't a lot of recent content on this channel, and I certainly hope that this remarkable team is still active in some capacity.

At any rate, here is their 2012 EFX-RUS ad, Fight For The Bracelet, with Ilya Pozdnyakov and Mikhail Belskiy.

This next one is another in any number of online action shorts I've unfortunately overlooked in the past year. This one was written and directed by actor Roberto Lopez who first came on my radar with a hilarious and entertaining series pitch titled Dos Fat Guys with co-star Marcos Miranda. I certainly hope that one manages to pick up some steam at some point in the near future, but in the meantime, here's a little something Lopez put together ans unveiled online last summer titled Killer Wives, with Stephanie Vovou, Micole Aubertin Murray and one of my favorite people in the Earthrealm, actress and stuntwoman Kimmy Suzuki. And as you'll see, it'll take a lot more than act of national security to protect this man from his infidelity.

Over here...well, I guess it just goes to show that gratitude is much more open to interpretation these days. This one is called My Hero, the first video from the screenfighting and film production platform over at New York City's Cinematic Fight Studio, directed by Lang Yip with key performances by actress Judy C. Yang, actor Jeremy Rafal and Cinematic Fight Studio's own in-house fight professor, actor Adam Lee. Take a looksy!

The folks over at Martial Club had a great year last year putting out quite a few shorts while expanding themselves in competitive martial arts tricking. They've been around for several years now, having appeared in numerous collaborations, and even performing some stuntwork in the first of two principal episodes for the long-awaited release of Epic Rival's inspired new series, Clandestine.

In kind, their ambitions toward film also come entrenched in an immersive display of Asian philosophy and culture, embodied largely by a tremendous appreciation of, and respect for kung fu cinema. And at the top of the year, they have now returned with a brand new online gem that further sets the Martial Club example of this, led by actor and martial artist Andy Le in the new shortfilm, The Greatest Adversary 對頭. Check it out below!

An undercover cop desperate to keep his identity a secret until a deal goes bad and he's forced to fight for his life - That's pretty much the basic story setup as can now be seen in full with the release of director Fabien Carrabin's new long-awaited crime short, Iron. Filmed back in November 2013, producer, actor and stuntman Eddy Benguedih leads the way as he fights his way out of a hail of bullets and a squad of thugs bent on taking him out.

Cedric Teller (Elit Unit) directed the action, and while a few of the action sequences appear to be cut short for some reason, there are some highs to compensate for the lows, including good acting and great cinematography between certain shots. Perhaps all we really need now are some subtitles, because as of this write-up, there are none, although I imagine it would be fun to interpret, somewhat.

If you're familiar with the caliber of film and action talent from the folks over at German martial arts and film team, Young Masters and enjoyed recent online gems like Tribal Ties and Future Boss, you'll be glad to see just how they've kicked off the new year with the brand new shortfilm release, Mister. The project was last summer as a homage to Lee Jeong-beom's 2010 thriller, The Man From Nowhere, and would have released earlier if other time-consuming obligations weren't an issue.

Nonetheless, it's finally here, and presents another fine example of what great filmmaking can achieve for other hungry and inspired professionals. And in the case of writing/directing/action duo, badass in black Felix Fukuyoshi Ruwwe, and the guitar-wielding killer stylings of Lorenz Hideyoshi Ruwwe, there's nothing but potential, and I certainly hope they achieve even more greatness in 2015.

And last but far from least, martial artist and stuntman Bryan Sloyer has become much sharper in the past year I've been paying attention to his shortfilms, with respect to writing and character development, as well as music, editing and fight choreography overall. He made much of this clear in his previous project, One Rule, and now he's returned to put his cinematic growth on display once more with the new short, The Keeper, with key performances by Alvin Hsing and Jay Kwon.

Action and drama aside, Sloyer's upping the ante a bit this time around, and it's worth noting as we enter a new year with plenty in store from an inspired, and otherwise fully-fledged artist.
