THE HIT LIST - August 31, 2015

This week's Hit List was an absolute blast to help put together. We've got new action shorts and reels of all kinds to snack on this week in addition to some brief updates on major projects that are forthcoming!

For now though, let's face it: The only way I'm starting off this Hit List is if I do it with one of the most popular videos online to date, and if you're a Jason Statham fan, you'll understand. It's a supercut of every single punch Statham has ever thrown. Ever. And it needs no further introduction than that.

Beneath that will be the week's stunt playlist with a slew of action, stunt and training reels by Noah Fleder, Awaken star Natalie Burn, stuntman Djibril Newik Chase, independent filmmaker Shahaub Roudbari, Mirkos Radas, John Renyolds, Uros Certic, Amiee Zannoni, Cornered webseries co-star, actor Bobby Hernandez and action actor Angel Vasquez.

Now we get to brings things here into focus just a bit with the latest installment of actor and Ameritoku mainstay Jason David Frank's online doc series, My Morphin Life. For this, we venture into a behind-the-scenes look into the spectacular episode featuring Frank and action actors Peter Jang and Alvin Hsing in the epic duel between the Green Ranger and legendary Street Fighter character Ryu. As always, these things come with a few snags and Frank sure had his, but it didn't stop him from powering through. Check it out!

Up next are a couple of other new director reels featuring a small variety of things, including action. The first comes with great revere for French action director Godefroy Ryckewaert who never ceases to impress, and his latest trailer for the new shortfilm, Hiro, samples that fact quite a bit with Alex Duong starring as a man forced back into the Yakuza underworld in order to save his daughter. Hiro is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival which kicks off on September 10, and you can purchase your ticket by clicking right here for the screening.

The second video comes from Canadian cascadeur, actor and filmmaker Taz Garcia in the form of First Bust, a story of two odd couple undercover cops well on their way to their first major arrest, as long as they don't get in each other's way, and you can imagine the hilarity that ensues. The project was initially going to be a two-minute short story which eventually expanded into something slightly longer when more people got involved, and as it stands, it could very well present a meaty concept for television if things go favorably.

Check out both videos below!

Up next is a bit of a teaser from the folks over at EMC Monkeys who have been very busy working on their own individual projects and other obligations in the past couple of years. Such things tend to get in the way of content creation which is what they've largely been known for, and now the team's teaser is officially circulating online with a number of exciting new projects that are either completed, still being filmed or already in post, including an upcoming collaboration with Corridor Digital, as well as the long-awaited Evolution Of Fight series, Vs. Ninjas series, and the upcoming Nerf Cops tete-a-tete sequel with the first part arriving on Friday, September 4 upon which fans can expect even more content every week thereafter. (If you haven't seen the first Nerf Cops installment yet, your chance to do so is right here).

Also up for viewing are two other new director reels, including Desciple's latest reel full of action and dialogue gems, with snippets from two of his latest hyper-reality action shorts, Hetja and Hetja 2; The latter title is also being groomed for a possible award win at this year's Action On Film Festival with acting nominations for two of its lead performers, Disavowed webseries star Will Yick, and The Stunt People's own Bridger Fox.

The second reel comes from Darren Holmquist of Dardrex Productions with a new director's reel full of long-awaited goods that are pending with planned releases before the end of 2015.

Time to pepper thing up a bit with some fighting, and following Holmquist's production reel is a fresh new fight featuring himself opposite Leonard Zhang, proceeded by some sweet Karambit/Gun choreo from director Evan Taylor, a quick little scene of action from Rising Tiger Films's own Leroy Nguyen and Edmond Shum, and a superb test fight from Jay Kwon with Alex Meglei and Brett Easton.

And lastly, it's been a long and incredible journey for independent filmmaker and film student Anthony Pellino for his latest labor of love, Mortal Kombat: The Chosen One. Inspired by the popular fighting game of the same name, and featuring fight design by Cinematic Fight Studio's own Lawrence Yip, this one takes a slightly derivative approach to the source material. Jonathan Lee, David Chen and Craig Zisel are joined by lead actor Kage Yami in the role of former Shaolin monk, Liu Kang who is about to receive the most unexpected visit of his life.

Pellino's goal was originally to create something more than a fan film, which is why it took so long to finish, aside from school, two crowdfunders, reshoots and other hurdles. Fan film or not, a project like this is just what we need to help keep the pulse beating among fans as a new webseries season is still pending, in addition to further details regarding the revived hopes for a film as recently as the top of last month. It's a great case for more similar content with dozens of characters to experiment and play with, and I hope this isn't the last we see from the creative field we have today in that regard.

Mortal Kombat: The Chosen One can now be viewed on YouTube in the player below, as well as on Vimeo!

Further worth mentioning is the current completion post-production of independent action director Eric Nguyen with the new short, Of Martial Arts And Men, with a September airing planned, and it just so happens that his Spring actioner, El Guerrero, has been nominated with a mention among a slew of other shortfilms for this year's Action On Film Festival which kicks off on September 18 through 26.

Other news includes the upcoming comic-book fan film sequel, Black Panther And Deadpool: The Gauntlet, which just finished filming over the weekend, and a trailer can be viewed here as well in case you missed it. In addition, further pending are updates for Robot Underdog's forthcoming episodes for the Dragon Ball Z: Light Of Hope webseries with actor Tim Neff (Flowers Of The Night) set to play Trunks. Major creative differences have currently invoked restructuring of the original script, Dragon Ball Z enthusiast and former series writer Derek Padula who made his case in a recent blog post after announcing his departure from the project; As pot-stirring as these things tend to be, the least we can do is hope for a great sequel after this year's stellar offering, which you can check out here.

Indeed, this week is another loaded one with more to come, and hopefully you've been able to keep up with all the craziness as last week's Hit List is just as awesome. MONTANA Goes Ballistic In The New U.S. Trailer!

Anyone looking for grounded action cinema with a sprawling audience appeal needn't look further than Shank helmer Mo Ali. His latest offering, Montana, has earned quite the attention with actors McKell David and Lars Mikkelsen spearheading the story set in London and two generations of vengeance at the forefront of it all.

Having initially landed 14 territories earlier on, and just as last year trailer run has shown, it's easy to see why this one would be on anyone's wishlist. Familiar narratives aside, the aging killer training his pupil to do the same is always a fun one to work with, and Ali clearly had his share here, introducing seething drama and a few doses of mild humor to accomidate the slick action that ensues.

SYNOPSIS:
MONTANA is a high-octane tale of betrayal and redemption which centers around the unlikely bond between a 14-year-old boy named Montana (McKell David) and Dimitrije (Lars Mikkelsen), a former Serbian commando, who work together to plot revenge against a powerful crime lord. While trying to stay one step ahead of criminal investigator Rachel Jones (Michelle Fairley), Montana and Dmitrije must prepare to take on their common enemy. As Montana is mentored in the dark arts of assassination, he comes to learn the true meaning of friendship, honor and respect. The film also stars Ashley Walters, Brad Moore, Adam Deacon and Dominique Tipper.
Level 33 Entertainment is granting the film a theatrical and digital release on September 18. Watch the brand new trailer in the player below!

R.L. Scott's CALL ME KING Announces The First Two Theater Locations!

At the expense of just a few years through development and production, writer and director R.L. Scott's new international action drama, Call Me King, has to be one of the most crisp and intriguing films to date. Actor Amin Joseph leads the cast with a sprawling narrative that sets just the right tone for an original story that not only goes beyond a merely confined crime drama, but one that could very well steer things into a sequel.

via Laemmle.Com:
“Haitian law has a very strict set of guidelines for the reversal of expulsion from one's native land.”

CALL ME KING, is the story of two descendants from an ousted Haitian dictatorship who immigrate to the United States seeking to one day right the wrongs perpetrated by their father.

While GRIMM (32,) and ZHO (28,) deal with the local distributors. Rhyis answers to only one man...ANGELO COSTA (53,) head of the Italian mob, who utilizes The Strap Set as his main enforcers. When the rules of the underworld are broken, all four men inflict punishment to the letter.

When it is revealed that Angelo has terminal cancer and decides to transfer power of his organization to Rhyis, Angelo’s drug addicted son NICHOLAS COSTA (38,) convinces the other syndicates within the city to go to war against The Strap Set.

At the same time, the father of Rhyis and Khalil,KNIGHT(55,) arrives from Europe and still holds the title as the underground King. Rhyis feels he’s now entitled to the throne, and challenges his father for power.Heavily armed with automatic weapons, martial arts skills and the Will to win...the Strap Set lock and load intent on returning victorious to the docks of Port-a-Prince.

By The Power Of Greyskull! Attend A Screening Of MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE At The Egyptian Theater This September!

The 80's were a great time for American animation and toy fandom. Classics like He-Man and She-Ra remain in memory with the former setting up the universe for both properties prior to the live-action adaptation for the former that further installed actor Dolph Lundgren into action legend status.

That very legacy continues to be celebrated to this day with American Cinematheque, Dammaged Goods and HeManWorld.com now set to host a star-studded event for both popular Mattel properties, kicking off with a screening of the 1987 action adventure, Masters Of The Universe at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, California. Cheese notwithstanding, it's a film to appreciate moreso these days for its ambitions with Thor: The Dark World co-scribe Christopher Yost now penning the script for the upcoming He-Man reboot, and time will tell if that one further propels the titular brand to cinematic greatness.
Based on the popular Mattel toy line, Filmation’s “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” was one of the most popular animated children’s shows of the 1980s. The fantasy-adventure revolves around Prince Adam, who is transformed into the muscular He-Man whenever he raises his magic sword and invokes the power of Grayskull, the mystical castle fortress of his planet Eternia. He-Man’s feline companion, Battle Cat, flying wizard Orko and evil nemesis Skeletor are among the colorful characters that made the original program a cult favorite, while spinoff “She-Ra: Princess of Power” (He-Man’s sister) gave girls an equally heroic role model.
Our celebration of the most powerful cartoon in the universe kicks off with the live-action MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, in which He-Man (Dolph Lundgren) faces off against Skeletor (Frank Langella). Lundgren, director Gary Goddard and production designer William Stout appear in person for a post-screening Q&A. The next day, the Egyptian is transformed into Eternia for a series of events beginning with a mini-convention of artists, collectors and vendors in the lobby. Along with classic moments from the TV series, the festivities include a rare screening of the theatrically released THE SECRET OF THE SWORD and wrap up with the West Coast premiere of TOY MASTERS, the recent documentary about the origins of “Masters of the Universe.” Filmation veterans Tom Sito, Larry DiTillio, Diane Pershing and Marc Scott Zicree, along with voice actors Alan Oppenheimer (Skeletor) and Melendy Britt (She-Ra), will be on hand for a discussion and to meet fans.
Series programmed by Grant Moninger and Duvien Ho. Program notes by John Hagelston.
The event is scheduled for Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19. Head over to the official American Cinematheque website for more event and ticket info!

SUICIDE SQUAD Wraps Filming!

Director David Ayer shared an ensemble cast and crew photo via Twitter on Friday announcing the completion of principle photography for Warner Bros.'s upcoming DC Comics adaptation, Suicide Squad. Filming began back in April under the working title of Bravo 14, and just four months before it would break ground at San Diego Comic-Con 2015 with a current tally of well over 50.7 million views compared to that of the studio's forthcoming Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice now at over 45.7 million.

Take a look!

Between the epic cast photo back in May, the comic-con trailer, actress Margot Robbie's newfound tattoo artisanship as DC femme fatale Harley Quinn, actor Jared Leto's entry as the cinematic remergence of The Joker for a new generation of DC fans and superhero cinephiles alike, there's plenty of reason to be excited for this one. Ayer's grounded application for a big scale comic book epic full of fantasy will be greatly appreciated following previous films like End Of Watch and last year's explosive war drama, Fury, with a slight nod to at least one other comic book franchise which is currently posied for a future franchise reboot of its own. And now all we need is another year of trailers and even more comic book movie angst! Fantastic.

Robie and Leto join Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevigne and Viola Davis with Ike Barinholtz, Jim Parrack, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jay Hernandez, Adam Beach, Karen Fukuhara, Raymond Olubowale and others for the film's release on August 5, 2016 following Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice on March 25, 2016.
