THE HIT LIST - August 31, 2015

This week's Hit List was an absolute blast to help put together. We've got new action shorts and reels of all kinds to snack on this week in addition to some brief updates on major projects that are forthcoming!

For now though, let's face it: The only way I'm starting off this Hit List is if I do it with one of the most popular videos online to date, and if you're a Jason Statham fan, you'll understand. It's a supercut of every single punch Statham has ever thrown. Ever. And it needs no further introduction than that.

Beneath that will be the week's stunt playlist with a slew of action, stunt and training reels by Noah Fleder, Awaken star Natalie Burn, stuntman Djibril Newik Chase, independent filmmaker Shahaub Roudbari, Mirkos Radas, John Renyolds, Uros Certic, Amiee Zannoni, Cornered webseries co-star, actor Bobby Hernandez and action actor Angel Vasquez.

Now we get to brings things here into focus just a bit with the latest installment of actor and Ameritoku mainstay Jason David Frank's online doc series, My Morphin Life. For this, we venture into a behind-the-scenes look into the spectacular episode featuring Frank and action actors Peter Jang and Alvin Hsing in the epic duel between the Green Ranger and legendary Street Fighter character Ryu. As always, these things come with a few snags and Frank sure had his, but it didn't stop him from powering through. Check it out!

Up next are a couple of other new director reels featuring a small variety of things, including action. The first comes with great revere for French action director Godefroy Ryckewaert who never ceases to impress, and his latest trailer for the new shortfilm, Hiro, samples that fact quite a bit with Alex Duong starring as a man forced back into the Yakuza underworld in order to save his daughter. Hiro is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival which kicks off on September 10, and you can purchase your ticket by clicking right here for the screening.

The second video comes from Canadian cascadeur, actor and filmmaker Taz Garcia in the form of First Bust, a story of two odd couple undercover cops well on their way to their first major arrest, as long as they don't get in each other's way, and you can imagine the hilarity that ensues. The project was initially going to be a two-minute short story which eventually expanded into something slightly longer when more people got involved, and as it stands, it could very well present a meaty concept for television if things go favorably.

Check out both videos below!

Up next is a bit of a teaser from the folks over at EMC Monkeys who have been very busy working on their own individual projects and other obligations in the past couple of years. Such things tend to get in the way of content creation which is what they've largely been known for, and now the team's teaser is officially circulating online with a number of exciting new projects that are either completed, still being filmed or already in post, including an upcoming collaboration with Corridor Digital, as well as the long-awaited Evolution Of Fight series, Vs. Ninjas series, and the upcoming Nerf Cops tete-a-tete sequel with the first part arriving on Friday, September 4 upon which fans can expect even more content every week thereafter. (If you haven't seen the first Nerf Cops installment yet, your chance to do so is right here).

Also up for viewing are two other new director reels, including Desciple's latest reel full of action and dialogue gems, with snippets from two of his latest hyper-reality action shorts, Hetja and Hetja 2; The latter title is also being groomed for a possible award win at this year's Action On Film Festival with acting nominations for two of its lead performers, Disavowed webseries star Will Yick, and The Stunt People's own Bridger Fox.

The second reel comes from Darren Holmquist of Dardrex Productions with a new director's reel full of long-awaited goods that are pending with planned releases before the end of 2015.

Time to pepper thing up a bit with some fighting, and following Holmquist's production reel is a fresh new fight featuring himself opposite Leonard Zhang, proceeded by some sweet Karambit/Gun choreo from director Evan Taylor, a quick little scene of action from Rising Tiger Films's own Leroy Nguyen and Edmond Shum, and a superb test fight from Jay Kwon with Alex Meglei and Brett Easton.

And lastly, it's been a long and incredible journey for independent filmmaker and film student Anthony Pellino for his latest labor of love, Mortal Kombat: The Chosen One. Inspired by the popular fighting game of the same name, and featuring fight design by Cinematic Fight Studio's own Lawrence Yip, this one takes a slightly derivative approach to the source material. Jonathan Lee, David Chen and Craig Zisel are joined by lead actor Kage Yami in the role of former Shaolin monk, Liu Kang who is about to receive the most unexpected visit of his life.

Pellino's goal was originally to create something more than a fan film, which is why it took so long to finish, aside from school, two crowdfunders, reshoots and other hurdles. Fan film or not, a project like this is just what we need to help keep the pulse beating among fans as a new webseries season is still pending, in addition to further details regarding the revived hopes for a film as recently as the top of last month. It's a great case for more similar content with dozens of characters to experiment and play with, and I hope this isn't the last we see from the creative field we have today in that regard.

Mortal Kombat: The Chosen One can now be viewed on YouTube in the player below, as well as on Vimeo!

Further worth mentioning is the current completion post-production of independent action director Eric Nguyen with the new short, Of Martial Arts And Men, with a September airing planned, and it just so happens that his Spring actioner, El Guerrero, has been nominated with a mention among a slew of other shortfilms for this year's Action On Film Festival which kicks off on September 18 through 26.

Other news includes the upcoming comic-book fan film sequel, Black Panther And Deadpool: The Gauntlet, which just finished filming over the weekend, and a trailer can be viewed here as well in case you missed it. In addition, further pending are updates for Robot Underdog's forthcoming episodes for the Dragon Ball Z: Light Of Hope webseries with actor Tim Neff (Flowers Of The Night) set to play Trunks. Major creative differences have currently invoked restructuring of the original script, Dragon Ball Z enthusiast and former series writer Derek Padula who made his case in a recent blog post after announcing his departure from the project; As pot-stirring as these things tend to be, the least we can do is hope for a great sequel after this year's stellar offering, which you can check out here.

Indeed, this week is another loaded one with more to come, and hopefully you've been able to keep up with all the craziness as last week's Hit List is just as awesome. MONTANA Goes Ballistic In The New U.S. Trailer!

Anyone looking for grounded action cinema with a sprawling audience appeal needn't look further than Shank helmer Mo Ali. His latest offering, Montana, has earned quite the attention with actors McKell David and Lars Mikkelsen spearheading the story set in London and two generations of vengeance at the forefront of it all.

Having initially landed 14 territories earlier on, and just as last year trailer run has shown, it's easy to see why this one would be on anyone's wishlist. Familiar narratives aside, the aging killer training his pupil to do the same is always a fun one to work with, and Ali clearly had his share here, introducing seething drama and a few doses of mild humor to accomidate the slick action that ensues.

SYNOPSIS:
MONTANA is a high-octane tale of betrayal and redemption which centers around the unlikely bond between a 14-year-old boy named Montana (McKell David) and Dimitrije (Lars Mikkelsen), a former Serbian commando, who work together to plot revenge against a powerful crime lord. While trying to stay one step ahead of criminal investigator Rachel Jones (Michelle Fairley), Montana and Dmitrije must prepare to take on their common enemy. As Montana is mentored in the dark arts of assassination, he comes to learn the true meaning of friendship, honor and respect. The film also stars Ashley Walters, Brad Moore, Adam Deacon and Dominique Tipper.
Level 33 Entertainment is granting the film a theatrical and digital release on September 18. Watch the brand new trailer in the player below!

R.L. Scott's CALL ME KING Announces The First Two Theater Locations!

At the expense of just a few years through development and production, writer and director R.L. Scott's new international action drama, Call Me King, has to be one of the most crisp and intriguing films to date. Actor Amin Joseph leads the cast with a sprawling narrative that sets just the right tone for an original story that not only goes beyond a merely confined crime drama, but one that could very well steer things into a sequel.

via Laemmle.Com:
“Haitian law has a very strict set of guidelines for the reversal of expulsion from one's native land.”

CALL ME KING, is the story of two descendants from an ousted Haitian dictatorship who immigrate to the United States seeking to one day right the wrongs perpetrated by their father.

While GRIMM (32,) and ZHO (28,) deal with the local distributors. Rhyis answers to only one man...ANGELO COSTA (53,) head of the Italian mob, who utilizes The Strap Set as his main enforcers. When the rules of the underworld are broken, all four men inflict punishment to the letter.

When it is revealed that Angelo has terminal cancer and decides to transfer power of his organization to Rhyis, Angelo’s drug addicted son NICHOLAS COSTA (38,) convinces the other syndicates within the city to go to war against The Strap Set.

At the same time, the father of Rhyis and Khalil,KNIGHT(55,) arrives from Europe and still holds the title as the underground King. By The Power Of Greyskull! Attend A Screening Of MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE At The Egyptian Theater This September!

The 80's were a great time for American animation and toy fandom. Classics like He-Man and She-Ra remain in memory with the former setting up the universe for both properties prior to the live-action adaptation for the former that further installed actor Dolph Lundgren into action legend status.

That very legacy continues to be celebrated to this day with American Cinematheque, Dammaged Goods and HeManWorld.com now set to host a star-studded event for both popular Mattel properties, kicking off with a screening of the 1987 action adventure, Masters Of The Universe at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, California. Cheese notwithstanding, it's a film to appreciate moreso these days for its ambitions with Thor: The Dark World co-scribe Christopher Yost now penning the script for the upcoming He-Man reboot, and time will tell if that one further propels the titular brand to cinematic greatness.
Based on the popular Mattel toy line, Filmation’s “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” was one of the most popular animated children’s shows of the 1980s. The fantasy-adventure revolves around Prince Adam, who is transformed into the muscular He-Man whenever he raises his magic sword and invokes the power of Grayskull, the mystical castle fortress of his planet Eternia. He-Man’s feline companion, Battle Cat, flying wizard Orko and evil nemesis Skeletor are among the colorful characters that made the original program a cult favorite, while spinoff “She-Ra: Princess of Power” (He-Man’s sister) gave girls an equally heroic role model.
Our celebration of the most powerful cartoon in the universe kicks off with the live-action MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, in which He-Man (Dolph Lundgren) faces off against Skeletor (Frank Langella). Lundgren, director Gary Goddard and production designer William Stout appear in person for a post-screening Q&A. The next day, the Egyptian is transformed into Eternia for a series of events beginning with a mini-convention of artists, collectors and vendors in the lobby. Along with classic moments from the TV series, the festivities include a rare screening of the theatrically released THE SECRET OF THE SWORD and wrap up with the West Coast premiere of TOY MASTERS, the recent documentary about the origins of “Masters of the Universe.” Filmation veterans Tom Sito, Larry DiTillio, Diane Pershing and Marc Scott Zicree, along with voice actors Alan Oppenheimer (Skeletor) and Melendy Britt (She-Ra), will be on hand for a discussion and to meet fans.
Series programmed by Grant Moninger and Duvien Ho. Program notes by John Hagelston.
The event is scheduled for Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19. Head over to the official American Cinematheque website for more event and ticket info!

SUICIDE SQUAD Wraps Filming!

Director David Ayer shared an ensemble cast and crew photo via Twitter on Friday announcing the completion of principle photography for Warner Bros.'s upcoming DC Comics adaptation, Suicide Squad. Filming began back in April under the working title of Bravo 14, and just four months before it would break ground at San Diego Comic-Con 2015 with a current tally of well over 50.7 million views compared to that of the studio's forthcoming Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice now at over 45.7 million.

Take a look!

Between the epic cast photo back in May, the comic-con trailer, actress Margot Robbie's newfound tattoo artisanship as DC femme fatale Harley Quinn, actor Jared Leto's entry as the cinematic remergence of The Joker for a new generation of DC fans and superhero cinephiles alike, there's plenty of reason to be excited for this one. Ayer's grounded application for a big scale comic book epic full of fantasy will be greatly appreciated following previous films like End Of Watch and last year's explosive war drama, Fury, with a slight nod to at least one other comic book franchise which is currently posied for a future franchise reboot of its own. And now all we need is another year of trailers and even more comic book movie angst! Fantastic.

Robie and Leto join Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevigne and Viola Davis with Ike Barinholtz, Jim Parrack, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jay Hernandez, Adam Beach, Karen Fukuhara, Raymond Olubowale and others for the film's release on August 5, 2016 following Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice on March 25, 2016.

Lee Min-Ho And Tiffany Tang Join Shin Terra's BOUNTY HUNTERS

Chinese co-production status has opened the floodgates for numerous titles to benefit film production in recent years, as is the case for 7th Grade Civil Servant helmer Terra Shin's new $30 million dollar action comedy, Bounty Hunters, following its appearance at Cannes. Harmonious Entertainment Shanghai, Pegasus Motion Pictures, and Starhaus Entertainment are backing the Chinese-Korean co-production with Pegasus representing the film globally.

Korean rising star Lee Min-Ho, and Mainland actress Tiffany Tang have been attached to star with Lee playing a mentally and physically talented member of a quintet of bickering bounty hunters assigned to capture a high profile fugitive for the FBI. Further cast and plot info are currently light but the gist of the film is being principally established as a fresh approach to the Chinese-language action adventure genre with a diverse cast, and Ip Man 3D scribe Edmond Wong providing the screenplay.

Production kicks off on September 2 with locations in China, Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, and other Asian countries, including Korea's Jeju Island for a likely 2016 date.
Check back for more info.

Lionsgate Enlists Avi And Ari Arad To Produce Game Adaptation, BORDERLANDS

Look out for another live-action video game adaptation heading our way from Lionsgate! Word has it from Variety that father-and-son producer duo Avi and Ari Arad are developing a big screen rendition of the hit shooter RPG, Borderlands.

The film, based on the game, will take place on the corporate-abandoned planet of Pandora where access to a mysterious vault containing alien technology will ultimately determine life or death for a group of colonial survivors against a burrowing alien menace. Gearbox Software created the game which published in 2009 through Take-Two Interactive Software's 2K label, selling to the tune of well-over thirty-million copies globally to date.

Cast and crew details are pending, though folks at Take Two are clearly sold on the Arads' in the producers' chair. “Lionsgate has emerged as a major creative force in the global marketplace with an incredible portfolio of brands; our partners at Gearbox have pioneered and cultivated an iconic property; and Avi and Ari Arad are two of the most successful producers of action franchises,” Take-Two Interactive Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick has stated. “This alliance is ideally positioned to create a bold, provocative, no-holds-barred motion picture phenomenon that will delight ‘Borderlands” current legions of fans and captivate moviegoers around the world.”

Lionsgate co-chairs are also sharing their faith whilst insistent in staying true to the game's "in-your-face" nature as Borderlands adds to their M.O. of merging into video game territory. Avi Arad, is also involved in one other live-action game developing for film, Uncharted, as well as Sony's latest Spider-Man franchise with Marvel, and is one of several names producing the live-action adaptation of Ghost In The Shell.

Curious to know what Borderlands looks like? Check out a gameplay trailer from several years ago and stay tuned for more info!

Chilean Actioner, REDEEMER, Gets A Japanese Poster And Trailer

Yes, I fully admit to being invariably biased when it comes to specific action film titles. Ernesto Diaz Espinoza's festival favorite and recent Dark Sky Films U.S. release, Redeemer, fits the mold with Chilean action hero Marko Zaror starring in the title role of a man seeking redemption for his previous atrocities through dispensing unmitigated vigilante justice.

Zaror dominates the film with sheer veracity in his choreography and performance with long time martial arts and film cohort and friend, actor José Luis Mosca in the role of the principal killer villain, and you can read all about it in my 2014 review, as well as my earlier interview with Zaror back in May. There's plenty more where that came from in what lies ahead for Zaror with the current post-production and pending release of family superhero action adventure, The Green Ghost. For now though, we have close to ten years of action-packed awesomeness predicated by a genuine action star talent with only the biggest hopes in the world that certain projects will arise, including the earlier-announced development of One Good Thing, written by XYZ Films's own Todd Brown of Twitchfilm.com.

Redeemer gets its day in the U.S. on September 1 on DVD, Blu-Ray and VOD prior to its release through Klockworx VOD in Japan on October 10. Trailers have already made the rounds and fans already know what the film looks like, but the Japanese poster and promo are up for viewing below, if anthing, for the overall appreciation and excitement that Zaror is getting a greater audience.

Check Out What's Ahead For FX Series, THE BASTARD EXECUTIONER!

FX is taking viewers on a gruesome and bloody trip back to the Middles Ages with Sons Of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter's next vengeful endeavor, The Bastard Executioner. The promotional campaign has already begun ahead of the two-hour series premiere on September 15 with a slate of TV spots and more featuring Aussie stage actor Lee Jones in the title role.
The Bastard Executioner is a blood-soaked, medieval epic that tells the story of Wilkin Brattle, a 14th century warrior, whose life is forever changed when a divine messenger beseeches him to lay down his sword and lead the life of another man: a journeyman executioner. Set in northern Wales during a time rife with rebellion and political upheaval, Wilkin must walk a tight rope between protecting his true identity while also serving a mysterious destiny.
Guided by Annora, a mystical healer whose seeming omniscience keeps Wilkin under her sway; manipulated by Milus Corbett, a devious Chamberlain with grand political aspirations; and driven by a deepening connection with the Baroness Lady Love, Wilkin struggles to navigate political, emotional and supernal pitfalls in his quest to understand his greater purpose.

Suretone Wrangles Up D'onifrio's THE KID For Lionsgate

It looks as if there won't be any love lost for 17-th century gunman and outlaw, Billy The Kid in what music man-turned-film producer Jordan Schur has in store for his first venture into film.

Deadline reports that actor Vincent D'onofrio will be making his directorial debut with The Kid, with James Franco and Ethan Hawke also starring.Written by Andrew Landham, The Kid centers on the a young boy whose fondness of the aforementioned legendary gunfighter not only changes when reality harshly sets in, but also reshapes what true heroism means with the help of Sherriff Pat Garrett as they set out to avenge the death of the boy's
father and sister's prostitution at the hands of the boy's uncle.

Nick Thurlow and Sam Maydew are producing with former Geffen Records president and Suretone Records founder Jordan Schur seugeing into the film fray though his Suretone Pictures. Lionsgate will be releasing the film in the U.S. while further acquisitions await with the film's presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival later this year.

Stay tuned for more info.

Joe Carnahan To Direct Suretone's FIVE AGAINST A BULLET!

Deadline's continued coverage in music man-turned-film producer Jordan Schur's latest happenings with details for the new action thriller, Five Against A Bullet. The A-Team and Stretch helmer Joe Carnahan will be directing with a script written with Alex Litvak which focuses on five bodyguards tasked with protecting a mayoral candidate in Mexico's most powerful city when he is marked for death by a drug kingpin and his army after they murder his father and the previous mayor.

Actor Bruce Willis was reportedly initially attached to star while the film was developing at Colombia pictures. Lightsabers Square Off In A New STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS TV Spot!

Yes, we know there's been an awakening. And yes, we've felt it...or whatever else anyone of us might be feeling aside from it in similar capacity. What we also know is actor John Boyega will be wielding a badass lightsaber in pure Jedi fashion as Finn opposite Adam Driver in the role of Kylo Ren who, judging by blurbs from around the web, either may or may not be a Sith.

At any rate, Star Wars: The Force Awakens looks like an early box-office Christmas present for Disney and Lucasfilm. And surely, the latest 16-second TV spot will guarantee even more excitement and anxiety among the fans as the December 18 date slowly approaches. Check it out below!

Watch Two New Trailers For Anggy Umbara's Futuristic Martial Arts Thriller, 3!

While I would love nothing more than for director Anggy Umbara's latest, 3, to get a simulataneous release with other territories overseas, chances are we're more likely to end up waiting a really long time for that to happen. If it is to happen, I sincerely hope piracy doesn't affect it, because that would be devastating, and we can never have enough genuine and original action films in this day and age.

3 sports a tremendous cast and a look that will surely appeal some to the sci-fi fan base with actors Cornielio Sunny, Abimana Arysatya and Agus Kuncoro leading the story of three former friends on different sides of the ideological spectrum in a dystopian futuristic millieu where conflict is ultimately imminent.

SYNOPSIS:

Los Angeles, CA (August 27, 2015) - Once again Courtney Solomon showcases yet another heart lurching horror under his company After Dark Films. The film stars Phil Burke (Hell on Wheels), Russell Friedenburg (Among Ravens), Kiowa Gordon (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), Zane Holtz (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Christopher Kriesa (Cast Away), Castille Landon (Sex Ed), and Glen Powell Jr. (The Expendables 3; The Dark Knights Rises).

"Wind Walkers was a blast to make and we think taking it into the world with After Dark will be equally fun,” says producers Heather Rae and Dori Sperko, “Russell's vision plays on many levels and the genre audience is in for a wild ride!"

‘8 Films to Die For’ will be released in theaters on October 16, 2015, with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment handling all ancillary forms of media, including Digital HD™, DVD and VOD.

Check Out Michael Fassbender's Killer Look For ASSASSIN'S CREED!

There's already some appeal from fans of Snowtown helmer Justin Kurzel in lieu of the the forthcoming release of his latest Shakespearean venture, MacBeth. For this, we have the upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular Ubisoft video game franchise, Assassin's Creed with Kurzel reuniting once more with his two MacBeth leads, actor Michael Fassbender and actress Marion Cotillard with a script that will evidently take a slightly different turn by way of its newest character addition, "Callum Lynch".

Yahoo! Movies provided a detailed first look photo of Fassbender, armed at the ready and in full-assassin garb with a description of the plot that goes a little something like this:

Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.
With the sensitive nature of the video game fanbase and the desire of getting their respective film counterparts done right, playing with little twists and turns will always be gamble, although time will tell if Kurzel gets this one right. As far as the picture goes... so far, so good, I'd say.

Marion Cotillard, Michael Kenneth Williams and Ariane Labed round  out the current principal cast. Filming is set to commense on Monday with locations set in Malta, London, and Spain for a December 21, 2016 release, cutting it slightly close to the release of Gareth Edwards's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story which opens about a week earlier.

MacBeth is due in the U.K. this October with a U.S. theatrical date still pending prior to its Amazon debut next Spring from TWC while Fassbender's forthcoming reprisal as Magneto in X-Men: Apocalypse is opening on May 27, 2016.

FANTASTIC FEST 2015 Lays Out The Second Wave Of Forthcoming Titles!

The second wave titles has been announced for next month's Fantastic Fest with a flurry of films, several of which are already hits from prior festival events. Fans eagerly awaiting to watch Patrick Stewart at his continual best in Jeremy Saulnier's Green Room, and folks who love epic sci-fi and suspense thrillers who can't wait to see Ben Wheatley's High Rise or Miike Takashi's Yakuza Apocalypse ahead of its October U.S. release will certainly get their wish on top of titles already on their radar via the first wave.

Pay attention, because it only gets better.
Austin, TX - Wednesday, August 26, 2015 - Fantastic Fest is excited to announce the second wave of programming featuring the US Premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ THE LOBSTERas the opening night film. Lanthimos will be in attendance to share his wonderfully surreal examination of human connections. Joining THE LOBSTER is a dazzling array of the year’s most anticipated genre films from heavyweight directors including Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic THE MARTIAN, Ben Wheatley’s HIGH-RISE and Jeremy Saulnier’s GREEN ROOM.

Fantastic Fest will also host the World Premiere of LAZER TEAM, the first feature film from web series gods Rooster Teeth. LAZER TEAM director Matt Hullum and cast members Burnie Burns, Alan Ritchson, Colton Dunn, Michael Jones, and Gavin Free will be in attendance to celebrate the highly anticipated sci-fi comedy and join Fantastic Fest’s official opening night party, presented by Rooster Teeth.

“This is a big year for genre cinema. We’re exceptionally proud to honor incredible filmmakers and welcome back some of Fantastic Fest’s favorites,” said Tim League, Fantastic Fest and Alamo Drafthouse CEO/Founder.

Fantastic Fest filmmaking alumni are represented in three of the fest’s hottest titles: HIGH-RISE, GREEN ROOM and KLOVN FOREVER. Since his debut Down Terrace world premiered and sold at Fantastic Fest, Ben Wheatley has seen all of his subsequent films play at the festival. That streak continues with HIGH-RISE, his dizzying adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s chilling view of modern life. Jeremy Saulnier follows up his Fantastic Fest smash BLUE RUIN with GREEN ROOM, a brilliantly crafted and wickedly fun horror-thriller starring Patrick Stewart as a diabolical club owner who squares off against an unsuspecting but resilient young punk band. On a lighter note, the lovingly idiotic Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen reunite for KLOVN FOREVER, the latest installment in their hilariously disturbing friendship.

Sticking true to Fantastic Fest’s penchant for chaos and explosive events, they welcome Itchy-O to Austin for the first time. A blazing, 32-member aural assault from the darkest depths of Colorado, Itchy-O is a wholly immersive, musical experience on a massive scale. Said festival director Kristen Bell, “We cannot wait for them to unleash their percussive mayhem on our audience as hysteria has a welcome home at Fantastic Fest.”

Emphasizing the “world” in World Premiere, this year’s slate is proud to debut titles from all corners of the globe. Regional hotbeds South Korea (Lee Sang-woo’s DIRTY ROMANCE), Denmark (Bo Mikklesen’s WHAT WE BECOME) and the United Kingdom (Gareth Bryn’s THE PASSING) are dutifully represented while attention is paid to the less familiar markets like Puerto Rico (Angel Manuel Soto’s LA GRANJA). And for the first time in Fantastic Fest history, we’re world premiering a film out of the United Arab Emirates, Majid Al Ansari’s electrifying cat-and-mouse thriller, ZINZANA.

See below for the full lineup of newly announced film titles for Fantastic Fest 2015. Final wave of titles to be announced shortly.

Lionsgate, White Horse To Adapt Roman Empire Epic, EMPEROR For The Big Screen

Following the success of its YA novel properties like The Twilight Saga, Divergent and The Hunger Games, Deadline is reporting that Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment is teaming up with White Horse Pictures in their first cinematic venture for the forthcoming Roman period saga, Emperor. The goal will be a trilogy of films inspired by author Conn Iggulden's pentalogy of books published between 2003 and 2013, largely focusing on the political malfeasance and toxicity within the Roman Empire that loomed ahead for the lifelong friendship and subsequent fallout between emperor, Julius Caesar, and friend Marcus Brutus.

The film is being staged for a large scale vision akin to the likenesses of shows like HBO series Game Of Thrones and films like 300, with White Horse Pictures founders Nigel Sinclair and Guy East having begun work on the film several years earlier. Pride, Prejudice and Zombies scribe Burr Steers, along with Cast Away writer Stephen Harrigan and Hallmark's Cleopatra writer Ian McKenzie Jeffers now have a script ready with Willam Broyles Jr. who will executive produce with East as well as Tony To. Sinclair is producing with Hollywood Gang Productions's own Gianni Nunnari and Atmosphere Entertainment’s Mark Canton, and Mark Jackson.

The Emperor films are reportedly being set as a high priority with a director now being sought after. Stay tuned!

No George Miller For MAN OF STEEL 2

Den Of Geek is reporting that Man Of Steel 2 has been put on "permanent hold", which is a bit of a shock considering it was only last week that "The Death Of Superman Lives: What Happened?" helmer Jon Schnepp announced that Mad Max: Fury Road helmer George Miller was up to direct the film. Whatever it means, it's not to suggest that the film won't happen, especially since there's been a clear interest in making one now that Warner Bros. is well under way with its DC cinematic universe in addition to a potential Batman trilogy starring and directed by Ben Affleck.

Miller himself was supposed to direct DC movie, Justice League back in 2008 as his name was one of several candidates listed, including Lana and Andy Wachowski. His current business also includes adding to the desolate universe of his latest blockbuster success, Mad Max, while it is being said that Miller is, in fact, in talks to direct a DC film in which he will hopefully get the studio to agree to his terms, and at least now we know that in its current state, Man Of Steel 2 isn't that film...although it would be oh so nice.

The next five years of DC cinematic fanfare will be increasingly interesting while Man Of Steel helmer Zack Snyder is groomed to direct Justice League in two parts for releases in 2017 and 2019 after next year's Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. Stay tuned for further details.

Is Roel Reiné Directing A HARD TARGET Sequel?

Much ado has been said among fans for a potential sequel to action auteur John Woo's 1993 Hollywood feature, Hard Target. It felt more like a standalone actioner on its face, really, but that doesn't mean following up would be impossible.

Lead actor and action star Jean-Claude Van Damme is all for sequels to any number of his previous milestone hits, what with Hard Target having futher embedded his place as a Hollywood legend. So, if the latest report from Nu is true following earlier blurbs from the set of Van Damme's China set on Pound Of Flesh, it's no real surprise and I'm certain that nostalgic fans will surely appreciate this latest offering, now with The Man With The Iron Fists 2 and The Admiral helmer Roel Reiné in the director's chair. However, there's at least one catch.

Reiné is reportedly set to begin shooting Hard Target 2 in October through November without Van Damme returning to the role of skilled Cajun survivalist, Chance Boudreaux. While the first film saw our protagonist take on evil rich game hunters targeting Lousiana's homeless veterans, the sequel is currently being scripted for similar action sequences to take place in Thailand and Burma.

With Van Damme becoming quite the actor in recent years, a sequel re-entry for the screen persona of Chance Boudreaux would have been very welcoming for the fanbase with a gritty character that sticks greatly to its instincts when danger thickens. Unfortunately though, that doesn't appear to be happening, although thankfully Woo himself may be on board to produce with actor Vinnie Jones reportedly set for a role.

Van Damme's schedule may be pretty loaded considering previously announced titles like The Tower and The Penrose Affair are still pending, so it's reasonable to believe he'll be too busy for this one even if he were the preferred candidate to lead. At any rate, hopefully we'll soon learn more on who will be filling his shoes.

Jones is currently expected to appear in several more films from here on, including Allan Ungar's Gridlocked which has a 2016 stamp while Reiné's epic period naval actioner, The Admiral, awaits its U.S. release this Spring from XLrator.

Stay tuned for more info.

Japanese Crime Pic, SHIELD OF STRAW Gets The English-Language Remake Treatment

There is not a lot of love lost for director Miike Takashi's 2013 thriller, Shield Of Straw, based on author Kiuchi Kazuhiro's 2004 Kodansha crime novel of the same name. Osawa Takao and Matsushima Nanako led the cast with actor Fujiwara Tatsuya central to the film's premise about a team of Fukuoka detectives who come under fire from swarms of vigilantes when a vengeful billionaire puts a meaty contract out on a Tokyo-bound convoy transporting a murder suspect.

Made long prior to Miike's own professed promise of a return to formula with this year's Yakuza Apocalypse, Shield Of Straw was nearly panned by critics and fell to a mixture of cheers and louder jeers upon its Cannes premiere. Needless to say, there's always going to be some form of controversy when audiences bare certain expectations from directors, and though it's been two years since then, none of this appears to be an issue for the team now banding together for an English-language remake.

Variety is reporting that Chris Weitz, producer of About A Boy and The Golden Compass, as well as all four American Pie films, is set to produce the remake through his Depth Of Field banner with backing by All Nippon Entertainment Works and Nippon Television. Also to note is the a distinct vision clearly being set here for a solid actioner as hinted by the hiring of The Expendables 3, Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen scribes Creighton Rothberger and Katrin Benedikt for the screenplay.

Shield Of Straw, like most others, may not be the type of film for the crowd who isn't exactly fond of remakes and reboots, though again, that isn't to suggest they all don't work. Quite a few of them do when applied mindfully enough, and with any luck, the open-minded ones who may have seen the 2013 version may be able to appreciate what this one has in store despite whatever individual opinions are had. Besides, a director still hasn't been named and that could always be the defining factor in how well this latest effort bodes.

Miike is currently underway with the upcoming manga sci-fi horror adaptation, TerraFormars with Yakuza Apocalypse preparing a stateside release in the U.S. this October through Samuel Goldwyn Films. Weitz himself also has other notable writing credits as of recent with his current script for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story now being applied under director Gareth Edwards for next December.

Stay tuned for more info on Shield Of Straw!

Vietnamese Action Is Back With The Promo Teaser For TRUY SAT (TRACER)!

Director Cuong Ngo is ready to put Vietnamese action cinema back in the spotlight with his newest action thriller, Truy Sat (Tracer). Actress Truong Ngoc Anh reunites once more with Ngo followng her role in their stellar 2014 crime flick, Huong Ga, in addition to starring alongside lead actor Thien Nguyen in a story that pits a police woman who sets out to avenge the murder of her family with the help of an undercover cop after a botched attempt to foil a bank robbery.

Anh was on hand along with several cast and crew members in Vietnam several days ago at a press conference for the film's announcement, and accordingly, they've unveiled a spectacular action-packed teaser briefly showcasing what's in store. To say the least, the teaser holds nothing back in presenting Ngo's vision of bringing slick action to the screen by way of a meaty handful of Vietnamese-Australian action talent with Syndney-based Dong Thanh Alliance Martial Arts's own, actors Joshua Tieu and Ian Tran training the Vietnamese stunt locals for the action sequences to come.

Festival winning shortfilm Hit Girls co-lead, actress Maria Tran is also starring with fight choreography by Trung Ly. Principal photography is set to commence on September 15 for an April 2016 release.

Check out the teaser below!

Wes Ball To Direct Kickstarter-Funded Novel, FALL OF GODS

Director Wes Ball is leaving quite the impression these past few years with his main focus tentatively on the on-going Maze Runner saga as the second film, The Scorch Trials, gears up for its release next month. As such, Fox is determined to have him in the director's chair once more, it seems, in lieu of plans to adapt Norse epic, Fall Of Gods.

Fox has acquired the rights to the Danish-published graphic novel initially conceived at MOOD Studios on Denmark by way of crowdfunding via Kickstarter. MOOD Studios's own Rasmus Berggreen originally spearheaded the project along with Hitman videogame scribe Michael Vogt to help put what THR describes as a "Scandinavian stamp on Norse mythology" for the book's vast and multilayered universe.
For years he has lived far from society, tending to his farm and trying to forget the battles he fought…and the crimes he committed. But one day his love disappears, and he must set out to find her. He will once again have to face the creatures of Jotunheim and the powerful Aesir. Suddenly, the man he thought he had buried deep down inside has risen to the surface once more...and he comes seeking vengeance.
Ball is tapped to direct as well as produce the film, thus aiming to prove once more just how resourceful books can be with the aim of building big-scale cinematic visions around them. As such, he'll be joined by producers Joe Hartwick Jr. and Brooklyn Weaver, as well as Steve Tzirlin also served in script and story developement on Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

After Dark Announces BASTARD For October's 8 FILMS TO DIE FOR!

Patrick Robert Young and Powell Robinson clearly know their audience. Their latest directorial effort, Bastard now has a trailer up for its October 16 release as per After Dark Films's 8 Films To Die For slate, and compared to all the other trailers prior, this one's got some shock value written all over it.

By all means, check it out below BEFORE your next meal.
Los Angeles, CA (August 25, 2015) – Remember those classic 80’s slasher movies that were all the rave? Well, hold on to your heads, we’re bringing it back to the extreme. Bastard will be the 7th film in the ‘8 Films to Die For’ lineup, in theaters October 16, 2015.
“Bastard encompasses all the classic qualities that horror fans crave,” says Franchesca Lantz, Director of Creative Affairs & Acquisitions at After Dark Films, “it’s hard to watch, yet it’s impossible to look away.”

Written by Patrick Robert Young and directed by Powell Robinson and Patrick Robert Young, this character-driven film has been referred to as a “Triumph for independent horror.”

The film stars Tonya Kay (Get Him to the Greek), Rebekah Kennedy (Season of the Witch), Burt Culver (The Paper Boat), Ellis Greer (A Small Death), Dan Creed (Dinner Party), and Will Tranfo (The Creation of Aspen).

"Bastard is a labor of horror love crafted on a budget of blood, sweat, and visceral synth score,” says directors Powell Robinson and Patrick Robert Young, “Shot under the influence of Tom Savini and Jamie Lee Curtis' lungs, Bastard hearkens back to a time when people couldn't complain about the state of horror. Our approach was not to spoof or make fun of these old slashers, but rather embrace the mindset of how these films were made, and make our story with the same technique and passion. We wanted to give our fellow horror lovers the 80's cult flick they never got to see in theaters - the one that inspires them to go out and make their own. Because that's what films like Halloween, My Bloody Valentine, and Zombi have done for us."

Official Synopsis: Five strangers - newlywed serial killers, a suicidal cop, and two runaways - become suspect and victim when a masked murderer makes its presence known in an isolated mountain town.

‘8 Films to Die For’ will be released in theaters on October 16, 2015, with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment handling all ancillary forms of media, including Digital HD™, DVD and VOD.

Ian Brereton negotiated the deal on behalf of After Dark Films. Elsa Ramo negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers.
